Feature Request: Add Built-in Voice Typing Using Spokenly

Overview

I would like to suggest adding a built-in voice typing feature to AnduinOS, powered by Spokenly.

Voice typing would make AnduinOS significantly more accessible and convenient, especially for users who have difficulty typing or simply want a faster way to enter text.

Proposed Feature

Add a system-wide Voice Typing function that works similarly to Windows Voice Typing.

Users should be able to:

• Press a keyboard shortcut to start voice typing.
• See a small floating microphone indicator when voice typing is active.
• Speak normally, with their speech converted to text in real time.
• Automatically insert the recognized text into the currently focused text field.
• Use it in applications such as browsers, text editors, messaging apps, terminals, and other GTK/Qt applications.
• Start and stop voice typing quickly without opening a separate application.
• Keep the microphone indicator visible above other windows while voice typing is active.
• Automatically detect when the user moves between applications or text fields.
• Support punctuation and basic voice commands where supported by Spokenly.
• Provide a simple settings page for microphone selection, language, shortcut, and voice-typing preferences.

Why Spokenly?

Spokenly could provide a convenient foundation for implementing this functionality without requiring AnduinOS to develop an entire speech-recognition system from scratch.

The integration could ideally provide a seamless system-level experience where the user simply activates voice typing and starts speaking.

Accessibility Benefits

This feature would be particularly useful for users with:

• Limited mobility or difficulty typing
• Repetitive-strain issues
• Temporary hand injuries
• Accessibility requirements
• Users who prefer voice-based input

It would also make AnduinOS more competitive with modern operating systems such as Windows, which already provide integrated voice typing.

Suggested User Experience

A simple workflow could be:

Press Super + H → Microphone appears → Speak → Text is inserted automatically → Press shortcut again to stop.

The microphone indicator should remain always on top, so it does not disappear behind other application windows.

Conclusion

Adding system-wide voice typing using Spokenly would make AnduinOS more accessible, modern, and user-friendly. I believe this could be a valuable built-in feature for users who want a Windows-like voice typing experience while using Linux.

Regarding WhisperX vs Spokenly (or other Whisper engines):Licensing & Bundling:Spokenly is proprietary (closed-source), which might create licensing or packaging constraints if shipped out-of-the-box in a Linux distribution. WhisperX is fully open-source (BSD/MIT). However, standard WhisperX relies on a heavier PyTorch pipeline (VAD + forced alignment) aimed more at long-form audio alignment rather than instant low-latency typing. Lighter Open-Source Engine Alternatives:whisper.cpp (C/C++) or faster-whisper (CTranslate2): These are significantly lighter on CPU/RAM than full PyTorch-based Whisper models. They run fast local inference even on mid-range hardware or integrated graphics via Vulkan/CPU AVX.Linux Architecture (X11 & Wayland Injection):For seamless system-wide text injection without requiring custom app focus hooks, the daemon can record audio on a hotkey (Super + H), run local inference with whisper.cpp, and simulate keystrokes using:Wayland: ydotool / wtype / uinputX11: xdotoolExisting open-source Linux implementations like Vocalinux or VOXD use this exact combination (whisper.cpp + system tray/overlay + ydotool) to deliver offline, zero-latency dictation. That’s awesome news! Thank you for accepting the suggestion and adding it to the roadmap for 2.0.3. Splitting it into anduinos-whisper-framework (daemon/engine) and anduinos-whisper-gtk (UI/overlay) is a clean architecture for Linux desktop packaging. Looking forward to testing it when 2.0.3 releases!
