Is it possible to set the Target Scope globally to Resource Group?

Currently, when using azd infra generate from an Aspire solution, I see that main.bicep sets the TargetScope to Subscription.

Is it possible to use the distributed application builder to configure the TargetScope as ResourceGroup for the entire deployment?

I know this can be done at the resource level but I need to do it globally because otherwise, azd starts performing checks in the subscription scope which I don't have permissions for.

Basically, what I want is to use an existing resource group instead of creating a new one.

Hello @sandord,
yes, try to change your main.bicep to:

targetScope = 'resourceGroup'

Then set AZURE_RESOURCE_GROUP in your azd environment:

azd env set AZURE_RESOURCE_GROUP <your-resourcegroup>

This makes azd deploy to that resource group and avoids subscription-scope checks.

I don’t believe there’s a way to set the Bicep targetScope from code in the AppHost\DistributedApplicationBuilder. Aspire’s APIs let you configure Azure resources but deployment scope is handled by azd and the generated Bicep.

There's no way to change it from the apphost as yet but there will be.
