What is the Present Continuous?

  • A verb tense describing actions happening now
  • Used for temporary actions, future arrangements, and changing situations

Example:
She is studying right now.


Structure

Subject + am / is / are + verb-ing

Subject Be Verb Example
I am I am eating
He/She/It is She is eating
You/We/They are They are eating

Verb + ing Rules

  • Most verbs → add -ing
    work → working
  • Ending in e → drop e + ing
    make → making
  • Short vowel + consonant → double consonant + ing
    run → running

Uses of Present Continuous

  1. Actions happening now
  2. Temporary actions
  3. Future arrangements
  4. Changing or developing situations

Signal Words

  • now
  • right now
  • at the moment
  • currently
  • today / this week / this month

Affirmative Form

Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing

Examples:

  • I am reading.
  • She is cooking.
  • They are playing.

Negative Form

Subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing

Examples:

  • I am not eating.
  • She is not watching.
  • They are not working today.

Yes/No Questions

Am / Is / Are + subject + verb-ing?

Examples:

  • Are you studying?
  • Is he coming today?
  • Am I speaking too fast?

WH- Questions

Wh-word + am/is/are + subject + verb-ing?

Examples:

  • What are you doing?
  • Where is she going?
  • Why are they running?

Common Mistakes

He playing football.
He is playing football.

She is study now.
