Hello!
How difficult would it be to put the app into the Google Play Store?
Why I'm asking: My mother is 80 years old. She wasn't exactly on top of her game when it comes to modern technology before, and the recent stroke certainly didn't improve the situation.
Because of reasons, the only way she can get TV right now is via a Google TV streaming client plugged into her TV. And she struggles to use it correctly. All those different apps from the different broadcasters, every one looks different and has the "Live TV" functionality somewhere else - and usually hidden in an initially invisible side bar or down at bottom of a long page to scroll. Way too complicated and confusing for her. I've shown it to her dozens of times, and she still can't get it right.
She just wants to watch linear public TV (ARD, ZDF, etc.) like in the old days. That's what she's used to and what she comprehends. But the official apps from ARD and ZDF make it really, really hard for her. In comes Zapp and offers a perfect solution. You start on the Live tab and just pick the station you want from the list. Easy, peasy. That's how all streaming apps should be! All that money from the mandatory fees, and they get outdone by a bunch of open source developers. Go figure. But I digress.
Here's the problem: I can install Zapp via sideloading or another store. Sure. But then I don't get automatic updates. The Android system will always ask "Do you want to install this?". Even if you allow 3rd party installations, that question always pops up. I can answer it. My mom can't. She gets confused. Only the Play Store has the power to install updates without confirmation. That's not how it should be in a fair market but it is the reality we have to live with. Unless you root the device (which is complicated on this model and can get you into problems with other streaming apps - in the rare case where she might need them).
Bonus points if there was an option in Zapp itself to make it the default launcher so that it starts automatically when you power the device on or press the home button on the remote. I think that can be done with other apps (I only did some preliminary research) but it would certainly be more convenient if Zapp could do it for me.
