My only guess is that there's a tcp bottleneck between two containers, and having them in one reduces that.

Other than that, I have no clue.

Just found this repo through your benchmark (-post) while searching for a fix myself.
I am currently running a stack through (Docker for Mac) docker-compose with wordpress:php7.4-fpm behind a standard nginx container.

My pages run painfully slow with TTFB's ~5s 😤

I am not sure what could be the bottleneck: I've disabled Xdebug and I looked at running network_mode:host (but gave up because this means comms between nginx/php-fpm are kaputt(?)

Another thing I see people mention is the slowness of volumes. Suggesting to use :delegated or :cached (both of which do not seem to speed up things much.

Combining nginx with php-fpm should address the slow networking-between-containers bottleneck. So I will look into this.

The official images don't enable opcache by default. After running RUN docker-php-ext-install opcache
or alternatively disabling opcache in the custom image, the performance advantage mostly disappears (but is still present, either using tcp or unix socket) against the fpm + nginx combo, and the mod_php + apache setup outperforms the custom one by as much as 20%. [in this particular benchmark]
